The St. Louis Cardinals will keep their manager after one of the most disappointing seasons in baseball this year.
Cardinals team president John Mozeliak confirmed Friday that the team will keep manager Oliver Marmol on for 2024,The Athletic's Katie Wu reported:
"I support him. I know he will be back next year. I think his work is good."
The Cardinals entered Friday with a 65-81 record, sitting in last place in the NL Central and almost assured of their first sub-50% season since 2007. They are also on track to miss the playoffs, halting a four-year postseason streak.
They won the Central last season with a 93-69 record, a huge drop-off for a team that was swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in the best-of-three wild card series.
Many expected the Cardinals to remain in playoff contention this season, but the down seasons of players like Nolan Arenado, Miles Mikolas, and Adam Wainwright, as well as injuries, took the entire team back a step. The addition of Wilson Contreras has not made up for the loss of Yadier Molina, and in fact, for a period of time this season,it became a sideshow.

He was promoted from bench coach to manager after the firing of Mike Shildt, and his only other managerial experience is at various levels of the minor leagues.
Marmol has not been immune to criticism throughout the season, but apparently he still has the support of important people in St. Louis. But if the Cardinals don't turn things around early next year, it won't stop him from getting the hot seat treatment.
